Environmental Conservation Activities

In year 2000, Koganei acquired ISO 14001 certification (the international standard for environmental management systems) for Tokyo and Komagane plants.
Koganei expanded scope of the certification and acquired the certification for the head office in 2004. The head office was moved, and Tokyo plant was merged into the head office in 2009.
According to requirements of ISO 14001:2004, Koganei identified environmental aspects, made an implementation plan and is striving to improve the environment.

  • Base Year: Fiscal year 1999
  • Benchmark: Monthly Average results from January to December of the previous year.
  • Planning Method: Annual rolling plan for the coming year in detail and for next three years based on numerical targets.
Summary of Environmental Activities in Fiscal Year 2009
  1. Koganei responds to a survey conducted by a customer about contained substances that are restricted by international regulations of environment related substances.
  2. Koganei designated June as “Environment Month” and engaged in environmental activities such as a cleanup event of Tenryu River, an eco-friendly commute, a cleanup campaign around the plants, environmental education and training for employees, an environment poster campaign, and environmental promotion with monthly newspapers, etc.
  3. With Energy Saving Act being revised, Koganei started measuring energy consumption at sales offices in addition to the head office and Komagane plant.
  4. Koganei ensured its legal compliance through its internal audit and found no legal violations though it corrected one problem according to its internal environmental standard.

Fiscal Year 2010 Review

  • We achieve our emissions controls accounting for sales fluctuation; these controls could not be accomplished by improving controls alone. We will aim to further improve controls and reduce emissions.
  • We have assessed the life cycle of iB Series 2 models from cradle to grave. As a result, we require our own evaluation standards, and have started writing them.
  • To reduce CO2, we continue to reduce our gas usage through proactive use of teleconferencing. With this practice now established, we shall continue working to reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Environmental education has made us conscious of the relation between business and the environment and helped us prevent environmental pollution. There have been schedule changes due to the earthquake, however, so some scheduled actions have not yet been acted upon.
  • While servicing air leaks, cleaning air conditioning filters, running efficient air conditioning and performing other straightforward energy conservation activity, we have reduced power consumption by introducing energy saving air conditioning equipment for test runs.
